Manifestation: More Than a Buzzword

If you had told me eight months ago that I would co-host a women’s business conference featuring the one and only Glennon Doyle as the keynote speaker, effectively making all my wildest dreams come true—I would have believed you.

Not because my partner, Minda, and I had all the details worked out (we didn’t). And not because we had convinced Doyle to join us yet (we hadn’t).  No, my confidence wouldn’t have come from any external sources or successes. I would have believed you because I was already manifesting it: a highly curated, once-in-a-lifetime conference for women who want to grow personally and professionally, with Doyle there to speak.

That was what I wanted. That was what I believed in. That was where Minda and I placed our focus and intention.

And guess what? It’s happening.

But more on that later (including details on how you can attend). For now, I want to zero in on the thing that made it possible.

What is manifestation?

At the most basic level, manifestation is the act of believing in something with the intention of making it your reality.

Let’s be clear: Manifestation is not just “making a wish.” It’s not just saying the same thing over and over and hoping that it will all work out.

Manifestation is a deep, intentional belief that leverages your energetic power to help you create miracles in your own life. It requires introspection, honesty and effort.

7 Tips to Make Manifestation Work for You

As someone who has seen the absolute reality of manifestation in my own life, I’ve learned a few things that will help you be successful as you implement your own manifestation practices. Here is what I’ve learned.

1. Get clear

If manifestation is really going to work for you, then you have to be clear about what it is you’re manifesting.

I could have said, “I want a New York Times best-selling author to speak at my conference,” or even, “I want to find a great keynote speaker that people are really excited about.” But if Mindy and I were being honest with ourselves and clear about what we wanted, we wanted Doyle.

Approach manifestation with that level of laser focus. How much money do you want to make? What date do you want to finish that book by? What position do you want to be hired for at that dream company?

If you aren’t clear about what you want, the universe will decide for you.

2. Eliminate limiting beliefs

Clarity is important to making manifestation work, but even if you are completely clear about what it is you want, you can still sabotage your goals in a number of other ways.

One of the most common ways I see people do this is when they try to manifest their goals without clearing their limiting beliefs.

What I mean by that is this: We all have beliefs that hold us back. We all tell ourselves things like “I can’t actually have that” or “I don’t deserve that” or “I’m not worthy of having that.”

With those kinds of beliefs in your way, you will never get what you manifest.

Instead, you have to work through those blocks and break down those barriers. You have to really believe, in your heart of hearts, that you are worthy and capable of receiving what you want.

I’m not going to lie, this isn’t easy. In my own journey to change my thoughts, I tried various traditional methods (like therapy and medication) for years before I had to come up with my own model, “The Dig,” which has now helped thousands of women on their own journeys to self-discovery and freedom.

The bottom line: We all have thoughts that hold us back, and we often have them for good reasons (trauma, abuse, belief systems, etc.), but we have to let those thoughts go in order to manifest a different, better reality for ourselves.

3. Raise your vibration

Energy speaks louder than words. What you feed with your energy will grow into your reality.

What exactly do I mean by energy?

You, me and everyone around us is constantly putting energy out into the world. Think about when someone you know well walks into a room. Before they even say a word, you probably have a good sense about how that person is feeling, because you can sense their energy.

It’s important to manage and clear our own energy so that we are keeping our vibrations high and feeding our manifestations with positivity.

Some ways to do that include:

  • Meditation
  • Movement (dancing, walking, exercising)
  • Spending time in nature
  • Creating an uplifting environment (sights, sounds, scents, etc.)
  • Taking a salt bath
  • Cutting cords
  • Listening to music

4. Use present-tense affirmations

Affirmations are another practice that has caught on in the past couple years, but not everyone understands them or uses them correctly.

When writing and stating your affirmations, it’s important to use statements that are in the present tense.

For example, instead of saying, “I want to be healthy,” say, “I am healthy.” Instead of saying, “I will be a good partner to my spouse,” say, “I am a good partner to my spouse.”

Speak as though what you want is already the truth.

5. Think it, feel it, believe it

When it comes to actually manifesting what you want, you have to think it, feel it and believe it. This will allow you to internalize it, embody it and become it.

You have to let the manifestation become part of you, instead of a nebulous idea that may or may not be real.

Sit with your manifestation. Spend time with it. Think about it. Feel it deeply. Visualize what it will be like when your manifestation becomes your reality.

Let it be real, and it will be real—because you will put in the effort to make it so.

6. Trust

The universe (or God, if you’re inclined to think that way) has your back. Everything is working for you. Trust that the energy you are putting out into the world will be returned to you in the form of the things that you want. Believe that there are things bigger and greater than you, and that they’re waiting to give you the help you need, when you need it.

This is what allows manifestation to be an enjoyable process, rather than a stressful one. You don’t have to worry about whether or not things will work out. You just have to believe, trust and do what you can to create the reality you want.

Beyond that, you can experience peace and harmony as you open yourself up to help from beyond.

7. Practice gratitude

Gratitude is one emotion that has an extremely high vibration, making it a magnet for positivity and abundance.

Notice the things in your life that you are grateful for. Express your gratitude. Focus on what is working and see the good in your world. When you do that, you’ll see more of those good things, and you’ll put yourself in the right mindset and energy space to create more of those good things as well.
